CAIRO, Feb. 13 (Xinhua) -- Egyptian police on Tuesday detained former anti-graft chief Hisham Genena over his remarks that ex-Chief of Staff had documents against the country, state-run Ahram newspaper reported.

Genena was a leading member in the former Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces Sami Anan's presidential campaign, before the latter was excluded from the race over charges of running for a political post without obtaining the necessary permissions, incitement against the army and forgery of election documents.

The former top auditor said that Anan owned documents and evidences on the country's largest events since January 25 Revolution in 2011, adding those documents are kept outside Egypt, and it will, if unveiled, change the course of many things and will convict many persons.

Later, the armed forces said to investigate the remarks of Genena as it incites doubts against the country and its institutions while Egypt is encountering a war to uproot terrorism.

The army added will use all the rights entitled by the constitution and laws to protect the national security, adding all the legal procedures will e taken against Anan and Genena.

Egypt starts its 2018 presidential elections scheduled for late March, where incumbent President Abdel Fattah al- Sisi is expected to make an easy win for a second term due to the lack of strong challengers in the race.
