PYEONGCHANG, Feb. 11 (Xinhua) -- Three-time Olympic silver medalists the United States exhibited fierce attacking power to tame 2010 Vancouver bronze winners Finland 3-1 on Sunday in the women's ice hockey Group B competition at the PyeongChang Olympics.

Finland started strongly with Venla Hovi scoring the sole goal of the team, six seconds before the end of the first period.

A determined American side fought back and took the second period with a brilliant unassisted goal by Monique Lamoureux-Morando and then Kendall Coyne's shot into an empty net. Dani Cameranesi wrapped up their first victory at PyeongChang in the third period.

"I suspect that it's the first game of the tournament. There could be some nerves involved, but all in all very happy with the performance and most importantly, the outcome," said Robb Stauber.

"I don't think many more teams play much more defensive than Finland. They are very, very good at it," he added.

Later in the day, defending champions Canada defeated the Olympic Athletes from Russia 5-0.

Canada topped Group A on goal difference, followed by the United States.

In Group B, 2014 bronze winners Switzerland beat a unified Korean team to top the group, followed by Sweden, who downed Japan in the Olympic opener on Saturday.
