UNITED NATIONS, March 9 (Xinhua) -- United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres was encouraged by the planned meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un, top leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), his spokesman said on Friday.
"The secretary-general is encouraged by the announcement of an agreement between the United States and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea to hold a summit meeting by May," Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for Guterres, said in a statement.
"He commends the leadership and vision of all concerned and reiterates his support for all efforts towards peaceful denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula in accordance with relevant Security Council resolutions," said Dujarric.
The White House confirmed Thursday that Trump has agreed to meet Kim in a couple of months at the invitation of the DPRK top leader.
