TOKYO, April 18 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks closed higher Wednesday as Wall Street's rally overnight set a positive tone amid hopes for a successful summit between Japan and U.S. leaders currently being held in Florida.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 310.61 points, or 1.42 percent, from Tuesday to close the day at 22,158.20, marking its highest closing level since Feb. 27.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, added 19.69 points, or 1.14 percent, to finish at 1,749.67.
Marine transportation, construction and real estate-oriented issues comprised those that gained the most by the close of play.
