SAMARA, Russia, June 25 (Xinhua) -- Uruguay striker Luis Suarez, who scored the first goal in the 3-0 win against Russia, thanked the Uruguayan fans for their consistent support.
Elected as the Man of the Match in the World Cup Group A encounter, Suarez appreciated the support of the Uruguayan people. "We are really grateful for all the things they (Uruguayans) do for us and their support, they are always with us, in good and bad times," Suarez said.
"It's important to reward all that support with victories and good results," the striker added.
Suarez said their strategy worked well against a Russian side in great shape.
"All the games are difficult and complicated, and local team always show their strength. I think our team strategy was good, we didn't want them to play comfortably and I think we achieved that," he said.
The 31-year old has scored seven World Cup goals, surpassing Diego Forlan to become the second leading scorer of all time for Uruguay at the World Cups, only one goal less than record holder Oscar Miguez.
"On a personal level I'm happy to move forwards, with the team we continue to make history," Suarez told a press conference.
With three consecutive victories and a clean sheet, Group A winners Uruguay are to compete with Group B runners-up for a berth in the quarterfinals. Spain and European champions Portugal will play Morocco and Iran respectively in the last round matches of Group B.
