China garners 5 gold medals in rowing at Asiad

PALEMBANG, Indonesia, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese men's and women's teams garnered 5 gold medals on Thursday as rowers won the final sessions of several rowing disciplines held at the Jakabaring Sports City (JSC) lake.

Zhang Liang booked a record time with 7 minutes 25.36 seconds in men's single sculls, bagging a gold medal.

He brushed aside Kim Dong-yang from South Korea and Japanese rower Ryuta Arakawa, who ended up with silver and bronze medals respectively.

Another gold medal for China's rowers was from the men's pair discipline, earned by Li Xiaoxiong and Zhao Jingbin with a time of 7:04.07, leaving behind Uzbekistan and Japan who seized silver and bronze medals later on.

A silver medal was earned by Chinese rowers Zhang Xieyuan and Chen Sensen, in men's double sculls.

In women's action, Chinese rower Chen Yunxia won a gold medal in women's single sculls.

She clocked 8:08.21 for the title, outclassing Huang Yiting and Aleksandra Opachanova from Chinese Taipei and Kazakhstan, who earned silver and bronze medals respectively.

Two more gold medals were earned by Chinese female rowers in women's double sculls and women's pair.

Jiang Yan and Li Jingjing was timed at 7:33.55, winning the women's double sculls final round.

Ju Rui and Lin Xinyu secured another gold for China in women's pair.

They clocked 7:55.50, faster than their rivals from South Korea and Indonesia that had to settle for silver and bronze medals.

China has collected 50 gold, 33 silver and 15 bronze medals, leading the Asian Games medal tally as of Thursday afternoon, followed by Japan, who have collected 20 gold, 25 silver, and 28 bronze medals.
