YANGON, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) -- Over 10,000 local residents from over 20 villages in Yedashe township, Myanmar's Bago region have been evacuated from flooding caused by the collapse of a dam spillway near Swa Creek, a regional government official told Xinhua Wednesday.
The spillway of dam near Swa Creek overflowed and collapsed, affecting the nearby areas in Bago region earlier in the morning.
Due to the overflow from the collapse of dam spillway, the Yangon-Mandalay highway bridge over Swa creek was temporarily closed as some sections of the bridge began sagging down into the Swa creek this morning.
According to the Ministry of Construction, some vehicles are now allowed to use the bridge except those carrying heavy loads.
"Water level in the area is now decreasing and we are planning to build double single bailey bridge within 24 hours to resume transportation links in the area," U Kyaw Lin, Deputy Minister for Construction said.
At present, the authorities are carrying out their rescue operations in the affected areas.
