KHARTOUM, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- Britain on Wednesday offered 5.6 million U.S. dollars in support of demining program in Sudan's South Kordofan and Blue Nile areas, Sudanese Media Center (SMC) reported.

"Britain provided 5.6 million dollars in support of clearance of mines in South Kordofan and Blue Nile States," Brig. Amir Abdelsadig Abu Zaid, director of Sudan's National Mine Action Center (NMAC), was quoted as saying.

He said the coordination between the NMAC, the European partners and the United Nations Mine Action Office has helped Sudan to achieve progress in mine action.

Eastern Sudan states, namely Kassala State, which had witnessed clashes between government troops and rebels until 2006, besides South Kordofan and Blue Nile areas, which have been witnessing armed clashes between the Sudanese army and rebels of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM)/northern sector, are the country's most areas affected by mines.

According to previous statistics by Sudan National Mine Action Authority, the mine victims in the country amounted to 2,014, including 585 dead and 1,429 injured.
