WASHINGTON, Nov. 28 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Department of State said Wednesday that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo would travel to Argentina for the Group of 20 (G20) summit during Nov. 29 and Dec. 1.

Pompeo would support President Donald Trump's participation in the G20 summit in Buenos Aires, according to a statement issued by the State Department.

State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert said in the statement that the U.S. top diplomat would attend G20 plenary sessions as well as the president's bilateral meetings with leaders from other G20 countries.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said Tuesday in a press briefing that Trump and his delegation would meet the presidents of China, Argentina and Russia, the prime minister of Japan, and the chancellor of Germany during the summit.

Trump, however, told the media on Tuesday that he would consider canceling his scheduled meeting with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, citing the ongoing Ukraine-Russia confrontation near the Kerch Strait that separates the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov.

At an investment forum on Wednesday, Putin called on the United States to abandon unilateral and politically motivated measures and to seek common ground.
