NEW DELHI, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) -- Thousands of farmers are undertaking a protest march in the heart of New Delhi on Friday, demanding the government to fulfill its promise of waiving the farmers' loans and increasing the minimum support prices of the farmers' agricultural produce.
Said to be belonging to over 200 different umbrella organizations from across the country, the farmers congregated at Ramlila Maidan in central Delhi on Thursday night, and started their protest march on Friday morning towards the Indian parliament to make their voices heard by the central government.
The protest march is being carried out under the aegis of "All India Farmers Struggle Coordination Committee."
The agitated farmers raised slogans against the government till past midnight, even as volunteers served them food and tea, said local media reports.
Meanwhile, elaborate security arrangements have been made to ensure that any untoward incident does not happen during the march. As many as 3,500 police personnel have been deployed to manage the crowds, said Delhi Police sources.
The Delhi Police is regularly tweeting about the routes being taken by the farmers and alerting the commuters to avoid the particular roads taken by protesters. Enditem
