BERLIN, Feb. 7 (Xinhua) -- Kingsley Coman's overtime winner helped Bayern Munich move past Hertha Berlin 3-2 at the round of the last 16 in the German Cup on Wednesday.

Hertha Berlin secured a fairy tale start on home soil as Maximilian Mittelstaedt opened the scoring from the edge of the penalty area to shock the German record champions only three minutes into the game.

It remained a lively opening period as Bayern Munich responded only four minutes later when Serge Gnabry benefitted on a rebound to hammer home the equalizer from inside the box.

Bayern gained the upper hand and controlled the ball for most of the time, but the Bavarians had to wait until the restart as Serge Gnabry sealed his brace after slotting home a through ball from James Rodriguez in the 49th minute.

The visitors remained in control of the proceedings, but Hertha Berlin lacked in ideas to pose any threat.

Nevertheless, the hosts were able to level the score against the run of the play as Mats Hummels' poor return pass allowed Berlin's Davie Selke to beat Bayern goalkeeper Sven Ulreich home from very close range in the 67th minute.

Bayern remained on the front foot yet they failed to grab the winner within 90 minutes. However, Niko Kovac's men dominated the overtime and were rewarded in the 98th minute when Coman headed home Robert Lewandowski's cross to the far post.

"We had high hopes but Bayern dominated and snatched a deserved win. I think my team staged a good performance despite the loss," Hertha Berlin coach Pal Dardai said.

Elsewhere, Schalke cruised to a 4-1 victory and eliminated Fortuna Dusseldorf to book their quarterfinal berth thanks to the brace from Salif Sane.

Leipzig progressed into the next round as well as Matheus Cunha's first-half goal was enough to knockout Wolfsburg and Augsburg advanced too after beating second division side Holstein Kiel on Michael Gregoritsch's last grasp winner.
