Traffic accidents kill 183 in Vietnam in lunar new year holiday

HANOI, Feb. 11 (Xinhua) -- During the nine-day Tet (lunar new year holiday) which ended on Sunday, Vietnam saw 276 traffic accidents which killed 183 people and injured 241 others, according to the country's Traffic Police Department on Monday.

Specifically, Vietnam reported 274 road accidents which claimed 181 lives and injured 241 people, and two rail accidents that killed two people.

A coach crashed into a car in central Thanh Hoa province on Friday, killing three people and injuring five others in the car.

On average, traffic accidents claimed 20 lives a day in the 2019 Tet, down from 28 in the 2018 Tet.

During the 2019 Tet, traffic police nationwide detected 21,880 cases of traffic law violations, imposing total fine of 12.7 billion Vietnamese dong (552,000 U.S. dollars), temporarily seizing 3,935 vehicles, and revoking 385 driving licenses.

In 2018, Vietnam witnessed 18,232 traffic accidents which killed 8,125 people, seriously injured 5,124 people and slightly wounded 9,070 others, posting year-on-year decline of 9.2 percent, 1.9 percent, 8.3 percent and 20.8 percent, respectively, according to the department under the Ministry of Public Security.
