The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average dropped 303.91 points, or 1.41 percent, from Tuesday to 21,199.78.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, fell 19.04 points, or 1.19 percent, at 1,586.44.
Securities house, insurance and credit consumer-linked issues comprised those that declined the most by the morning break.
