MUMBAI, May 9 (Xinhua) -- At least 81 percent of the samples of ice, lemon juice and sugarcane juice collected from local street-side vendors by the health officials of Mumbai Municipal Corporation was found unfit for consumption.
The samples included lemon juice from 280 vendors, sugarcane juice from 303 vendors, crushed ice from 385 vendors. Of these, 218 lemon juices, 268 sugarcane juices, and 300 ice samples were found to be contaminated.
E Coli bacteria was found in the majority of the samples, the health officer of the Municipal Corporation said.
Some types of E. Coli can cause illness in humans, including diarrhea, abdominal pain, fever, and sometimes vomiting.
In India, water pollution is a major challenge with nearly 70 percent of the country's water contaminated, impacting three in four Indians and contributing to 20 percent of the country's disease burden, said a government report in June last year.
