WASHINGTON, May 24 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will visit Germany and three other European countries in the coming weeks, said the U.S. State Department on Friday.
The trip, which is scheduled from May 30 to June 5, will lead Pompeo to Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands and Britain, said Morgan Ortagus, the department spokesperson, in a statement.
The top U.S. diplomat had scrapped a visit to Germany scheduled for May 7 and made unscheduled trip to the Iraqi capital of Baghdad instead amid escalating tensions between Washington and Tehran. Pompeo will meet with Germany Chancellor Angela Merkel and Foreign Minister Heiko Maas this time, according to the statement.
Pompeo will then meet with Swiss and Dutch leaders and senior officials before traveling to Britain to join U.S. President Donald Trump's state visit there, the statement added.
Trump is expected to pay a state visit to Britain on June 3-5, and then travel to Ireland and France.
