JALALABAD, Afghanistan, May 27 (Xinhua) -- Government forces have killed nine fighters affiliated with the Islamic State (IS) group including one of their local leaders, in Afghanistan's eastern province of Nangarhar, a local official said Monday.
Late on Sunday night, the Units of Special Force of the National Directorate of Security, or the country's counter-intelligence agency, targeted a hideout of the IS network in Chaparhar district, killing nine insurgents including Belal, a notorious local leader of ISD the hardliner IS outfit on the spot, district governor Mohammad Seddiq Dawlatzai said.
The militants' main base was also destroyed and huge amount of light and heavy arms and ammunitions confiscated during the operation, Dawlatzai said.
Militants affiliated with the IS group are yet to make comment.
