Myanmar, UN to launch mine risk education scheme for disability prevention

YANGON, June 5 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) are planning to launch mine risk education scheme for prevention of disabilities as part of state level schemes for implementation of persons with disabilities.

The discussions on the scheme were held between Minister of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Dr. Win Myat Aye and UNICEF Representative to Myanmar June Kunugi in the capital of Nay Pyi Taw Tuesday.

The two sides vowed to continue cooperation for information and management system, draw up a national strategy plan for the persons with disabilities, conduct social services for them across the country and work out schemes for early childhood intervention in four states and regions.

Myanmar held a two-day workshop in the capital in April to draft a national strategy for persons with disabilities.

The government has launched rehabilitation of schools, special education programs and other social integration schemes involving intensive care, harm-free environment, public awareness campaign in the interest of the disabled.

There were 2.3 million people with disabilities in Myanmar, representing 4.6 percent of the population.
