MEXICO CITY, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- The number of Mexicans killed as a result of Saturday's mass shooting in El Paso, U.S. state of Texas, climbed to eight, Mexican Foreign Affairs Minister Marcelo Ebrard said on Monday.

The latest fatal victim was identified as Juan de Dios Velazquez Chairez, a native of Mexico's northern state of Zacatecas, who succumbed to his wounds while in hospital.

"8 fellow Mexicans have died as a result of Saturday's terrorist act," Ebrard said via Twitter.

The 21-year-old assailant, who opened fire at a Walmart supermarket largely catering to the local Mexican-American community, is believed to have been a white supremacist motivated by hatred for immigrants.

Minutes before using a semiautomatic weapon to massacre his victims, Patrick Crusius posted a manifesto against immigrants online.

The total death toll currently stands at 22, according to the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), which is considering the case as one of domestic terrorism.

El Paso lies across the border from the Mexican town of Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, and cross-border traffic is heavy as residents of both cities go back and forth to shop, work or study.

Ebrard was due to visit Ciudad Juarez on Monday to meet with families of the victims.
