BERLIN, Oct. 19 (Xinhua) -- Borussia Dortmund returned to winning ways after Marco Reus scored the only goal of the match to beat front-runners Borussia Monchengladbach at the eighth round in Bundesliga on Saturday.
Both sides exchanged attacks from the kick off hence both goalkeepers had a lot to do in the opening period.
Thorgan Hazard and Julian Brandt tested Monchengladbach custodian Yann Sommer before Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Burki denied promising chances from Stefan Lainer and Breel Embolo at the other end of the pitch.
Sommer defused Mats Hummels' header on target with a diving safe before Dortmund thought they had opened the scoring through Hazard, whose goal was ruled offside after consultation with the video assistant referee at the half-hour mark.
After the restart, Dortmund caught a better start into the second half and came to golden chance but Brandt pulled over the target from good position.
However, the hosts eventually opened the scoring in the 58th minute when Hazard's through ball found Reus, who nutmegged Sommer from inside the box.
Monchengladbach needed some time to recover from the set back and it took the "Foals" until the closing period before they would get their next chance on target as substitute Florian Neuheus forced back up goalie Marwin Hitz to a safe.
With the result, Dortmund reaped their first win after three straight draws to climb on the fourth position whereas Monchengladbach remain atop the standings.
"I think we deserved the victory. Monchengladbach increased the pressure in the closing stage but we still had good opportunities," Dortmund head coach Lucien Favre said.
"We played a good game overall. We came back after the setback but in Dortmund you will need a top performance and a little bit of luck," Monchengladbach head coach Marco Rose said.
The following fixtures conclude the eighth round in Bundesliga on Sunday: newly promoted Cologne clash with newcomers Paderborn and Hoffenheim host Schalke. Enditem
