RIO DE JANEIRO, Sept. 29 (Xinhua) -- Flamengo have named Dorival Junior as their new head coach, just hours after sacking Mauricio Barbieri.
In a brief statement, Flamengo said the 56-year-old would take charge of the first team in their next match against Bahia in Brazil's Serie A championship on Saturday.
It will be Dorival's second spell as Flamengo's manager, having also led the club briefly during the 2012-13 season. The 56-year-old has been out of work since being fired by Sao Paulo in March.
Barbieri was dismissed earlier on Friday following the team's Copa do Brasil semifinal defeat to Corinthians on Wednesday.
Flamengo are currently fourth in the 20-team Brazilian Serie A standings, three points behind leaders Sao Paulo with 12 games remaining.
